Hofmann, Friedrich

The year 1992 saw the centenary of the death of A. W. von Hofmann, and following it two major publications. The first is remarkable for its detailed descriptions of the laboratories at the Chemical Institute in the Friedrich-Wilhelms Universitat in Berlin, and at the Technischen Hochschule in Charlottenburg, and also for biographical details (often with portraits) of nearly 600 German chemists in academia and industry in the late 19th century 43 The second is a collection of papers given at the centenary symposium in Berlin.44...

An example in which the kinetic equations had to be integrated numerically is given by De Pauw and Froment [53]. It concerns the isomerization of n-pcntane accompanied by coke deposition. Another example is given by Emig, Hofmann, and Friedrich [54] and concerns the oxidation of methanol.

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Adolf von Baeyer (1835-1917) studied under Bunson and Kekuld at the University of Heidelberg and Hofmann at the University of Berlin (from which he received the doctorate). Victor Villiger was von Baeyer s student. As an interesting footnote, although this work was first published in 1899, it received little attention presumably because suitable peracids were not widely available. Baeyer, A. Villiger, V. Chem. When the integral method of kinetic analysis is applied, numerical integration of the continuity equations containing the rate equations is generally necessary for the comparison of the predicted and experimental responses for each experiment in each iteration cycle of the parameter estimation. Examples can be found in the work of De Pauw and Froment [1975] on n-pentane reforming in the presence of coke formation, in the work of Emig, Hofmann, and Friedrich [1972] on methanol oxidation, and in Example 2.6.4.A on benzothiophene hydrogenolysis.
