Hoffman and Gronowitz - have applied this technique with marked success to the study of hydroxy-, amino-, and mercapto-thiophenes. Similarly, it has been shown that pyrid-4-one exists predominantly as such and that 4-hydroxypyridine 1-oxide is in equilibrium with comparable amounts of l-hydroxypyrid-4-one. - The method has also been used to investigate the structure of ions (see Section II,C, of article II by Katritzky and Lagowski).

The hydrogenation of 3-hydroxy propan al (HPA) to 1,3-propanediol (PD) over Ni/SiOi/AEO, catalyst powder was studied by Professor Hoffman s group at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlagen, Germany (Zhu et al., 1997). PD is a potentially attractive monomer for polymers like polypropylene terephthalate. They used a batch stirred autoclave. The experimental data were kindly provided by Professor Hoffman and consist of measurements of the concentration of HPA and PD (Chpa< Cpd) versus time at various operating temperatures and pressures.

Hoffman and Kordesch74,75 have presented a series of studies on the passive films on iron with particular attention to cell design. They have employed a so-called bag cell that allows for the in situ passivation and/or cathodic protection of the iron films. These were deposited onto gold films deposited on Melinex.

It should be noted that the critical nucleation process does not depend on M. This can be explained by our model of surface diffusion (Fig. 27). In the model a nucleus will be formed from the absorbed chains. We can estimate the number of repeating units within a critical nucleus (N ) using parameters a, ae, and Ah given in [14]. N is the order of 102-103 for the range of AT in our experiment, which is much smaller than the number of repeating units within a molecule (103-104). This indicates that a critical nucleus should be formed by a part of a molecular chain. Therefore, the nucleation process of the critical nucleus will not depend on M. Thus, it is a natural result that B does not depend on M in this study. This is consistent with the discussion by Hoffman et al. [28] on FCC. They showed that the nucleation process of an FCC does not depend on Mn in the case of Mn > 104. On the contrary they showed that it depends on Mn for Mn < 104, because ae depends on Mn due to the effect of chain ends on the end surface of the critical nucleus. 

The thermal Diels-Alder reactions of anthracene with electron-poor olefinic acceptors such as tetracyanoethylene, maleic anhydride, maleimides, etc. have been studied extensively. It is noteworthy that these reactions are often accelerated in the presence of light. Since photoinduced [4 + 2] cycloadditions are symmetry-forbidden according to the Woodward-Hoffman rules, an electron-transfer mechanism has been suggested to reconcile experiment and theory.212 For example, photocycloaddition of anthracene to maleic anhydride and various maleimides occurs in high yield (> 90%) under conditions in which the thermal reaction is completely suppressed (equation 75). 

Chen and Hoffman prepared new graft copolymers of PAA and PNIPAAm that responded more rapidly to external stimulus than previously studied materials (Chen and Hoffman, 1995). These materials...
