HMX explosive

Preliminary analyses were carried out by the autliors, and a tentative DM method was developed. Using tliis tentative method some practical examples were investigated, among tliem the shock-induced reaction of Al + Ni fine powder mixture and the stress profile of HMX explosive powders under the action of shock waves. The purpose of the testing was to determine the feasibility for disposal of PBXs with HMX explosive and Viton-A binder in a full-scale, dualchamber, fixed-hearth incinerator. A test combustor, or small-scale incinerator, was used for this purpose. A total of 125 lb of LX-04 and LX-10 explosives were combusted in the testing. 

Al tschuler attributed the nonideal behavior of his tungsten-loaded HMX explosives to the explosive detonating at an average velocity determined by the individual detonation wavelets traveling around the metal particles. Dremin attributed the nonideal behavior to a transfer of detonation product energy to the tungsten particles by heat conduction. 

The most sensitive HMX explosive is the one with particle sizes between coarse and very fine explosive. The hole size for a matrix of HMX with maximum sensitivity is two orders of magnitude smaller than for TATB or TNT as are the hole size for failure to occur. 

The experimental observations of Travis and Campbell are consistent with the desensitization being caused by the preshock, making the HMX explosive more homogeneous and reducing the explosive temperature upon arrival of the detonation wave by the multiple shock process.
