A high-precision robot designed to produce cDNA microarrays was utilized to spot carbohydrate antigens onto a chemically modified glass slide. The microspotting capacity of this system is approximately 20,000 spots per chip. The antibody-stained slides were then scanned for fluorescent signals with a Biochip Scanner that was developed for cDNA microarrays. The microarray results were subsequently confirmed by at least one of the conventional alternative assays.

Future development of novel aptazyme technologies, in particular, those involving nanomaterials, will continue to drive the fields of diagnostics and biosensing toward more high-throughput platforms, as well as powerful new LOC devices (Alexander, 2007). 

Systems medicine requires the integration of many different types of data into models that have predictive behavior. We discuss below several of the high-throughput platforms that are generating large-scale data for a systems approach to disease. 

Optical or piezo-resistive read-out detectors can be employed for design of microcantilevers-based nanomechanical biosenors for direct detection of biomolecular interactions.73 Microcantilevers translate molecular recognition of biomolecules into nanomechanical motion, and high-throughput platforms using arrays of cantilavers can be used for simultaneous measurement and read-out of hundreds of samples. 

The term Omics refers to the global approach that these techniques provide. It can be applied to different biological compartments of study, such as the transcriptome, proteome, methylome, kinome, metabolome, and many other terms that have appeared along the growth of novel high-throughput platforms.
