The first high-pressure NMR probe was developed by Benedek and Purcell in 1954 [4]. Their probe, like many of those in use today, was constructed from beryllium-copper alloy (Berylco 25) and was used in hydrostatic pressure experiments at pressures up to 10000 bar. A new development in high-pressure NMR probe design is a multipurpose high-pressure autoclave made from the thermoplastic polyetheretherketone (PEEK) (67). This NMR autoclave was used for in situ NMR imaging of a compressed gas system, namely, the exchange of methanol for liquid CO2 in nanoporous silica-alcogels, reported for the first time.
