In high-performance tapes the backing consists of a relatively thick highly compliant cross-linked polymer layer, which may be foamed, and has a major impact on the strength of the bond. 

To be suitable as a pressure sensitive adhesive, acrylic adhesives are based on acrylic esters with four or more carbon atoms, the most common of which are n-butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. These acrylates are copolymerized with other monomers such as acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, other acrylates, styrene, vinyl acetate, and a,i8- unsaturated carboxylic acids, depending on the adhesive properties required. This versatility inherent in the acrylics has led to the design of products requiring widely different adhesive properties, from those of permanent labels and high performance tapes to removable labels and films. ...

The method of Denda et al.14 was used to measure ceramides. After SC was stripped with adhesive cellophane tape, it was removed from the tape and washed several times with hexane, followed by drying in a vacuum desiccator. Lipids were extracted from the SC sample in a mixture of chloroform and methanol (2 1). Ceramides were separated with a silica gel column (Bond Elut SI, Analytichem International, United States) and purified for measurement by gas chromatography (GC-14A, Shimazu Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Japan). The composition of ceramides was obtained by high-performance thin layer chromatography and scanned on a recording photodensitometer (TLC Scanner CS930, Shimazu, Japan).

There are also TP equivalents, such as high performance carbon/PEEK tapes, in which continuous filament and matrix have been closely combined by a form of pultrusion process and require only placing in position (often by winding or layering) and heating, to fuse the TP matrix. Technology extending the principle to continuous filament and PP matrices is also available. 

This process offers a method of producing more predictable laminated structures, for high performance applications. Prepreg tapes are mainly made of the higher performance materials, such as epoxy/carbon or PEEK/carbon. This system can also be used in filament winding.
