Similar to the STD experiment, exchange-transferred NOE spectroscopy (et-NOESY) provides information about a binding event between a small molecule and a high molecular weight biomolecule, even when the biomolecule itself is not amenable to NMR studies because of broad line widths, low solubility, or fast T2 relaxation. 

Gel filtration HPLC of hAB-1 in 0.2 M sodium phosphate (pH 6.8) buffer showed that the majority of the protein (97%) was in the monomer form with retention time similar to the bovine gamma globulin (158 kDa) standard. MALDI-MS is a technique well suited for the examination of low and high molecular weight biomolecules (6,7). Figure 4 shows the mass spectra for hAB-1, hAB-2 and pMAB diluted in Tris/OG buffer. The spectra contain signals for (M+H) (148 kDa), (M+2H) (74 kDa), (M+3H) (49.5 kDa) and (M+4H) (37.6 kDa) species in each case. In addition a minor signal at 23-24 kDa was observed. 

These heterogeneous catalytic processes (where a surface of a solid phase acts as catalyst), and the enzyme catalysis (where high molecular weight biomolecules are the active catalysts), are both outside the scope of this article.
