Hiddensee

Location A, southeast of Kriegers Flak—a shoal of less than 20 m depth north of Riigen—is the northernmost position of a section of four ADCP moorings aligned between the Kriegers Flak and Hiddensee, a small island east off immediately Riigen (see A-D in Fig. 6.1). The section represents simultaneous current measurements of about 215 days with one interim replacement of the ADCPs on 27 July that lasted only a few hours. 

At the southernmost position (D, Table 6.11) near the island of Hiddensee, the water depth is only 14 m. The highest means for magnitude and speed occur near the surface, and both decrease with increasing depth from 28-20 cm/s and 10-2 cm/s, respectively. The same holds for the stability that decreases from 36% at 4 m to 9% at 10 m depth. The averaged flow... 

The measurements were to provide information on sand displacements over the sea floor and sand suspension in the water column by currents and waves in near-shore waters. The sand transports cause an undesired sand filling of the shallow local shipping line from and to Stralsund in the local Gellenstrom area off Hiddensee. The question was where is the sand...

Data from the shallow inshore sites off Hiddensee (WKl and WK2 at 6 and 7 m depth) also exhibit a directional stability of about 50%. Here, in the narrow Gellenstrom area close to the western coast off Hiddensee, surface waves possibly affect the alongshore flow in addition to wind and topography.
