HgCl

HgCb appears to be the only representative of this structure type. A strongly distorted version of the HgCl2 structure is met in /3-HgClBr. This mixed halide still contains the linear molecules but these are no longer layered.

Mercury(II) chloride, HgC, corrosive sublimate, m.p. 280 C, b.p. 302"C. Essentially covalent material (Hg plus CL Hg plus aqua regia). Forms complex halide ions, e.g. (HgCU) (HgCL)" in excess HCl and forms complexes. Very poisonous. 

Does not reduce KMnO, HgCl, or ammoniacal AgNOj. 

All the early literature concerning thiazoles mentions numerous metallic complex-salts formed by addition to the thiazole of the aqueous solution of the metal salt and that could be used for identification purposes. The most usual complexes so obtained are platinum double salts, for example, (4-methylthiazole HC1)2 PtCU (m.p. deep 204°C) (25), or mercuric chloride derivatives, for example, 2,4-dimethyl-thiazole 2 HgCl (m.p. deep 176-177°C) (458). 

Chlorine and bromine add to benzene in the absence of oxygen and presence of light to yield hexachloro- [27154-44-5] and hexabromocyclohexane [30105-41-0] CgHgBr. Technical benzene hexachloride is produced by either batch or continuous methods at 15—25°C in glass reactors. Five stereoisomers are produced in the reaction and these are separated by fractional crystallization. The gamma isomer (BHC), which composes 12—14% of the reaction product, was formerly used as an insecticide. Benzene hexachloride [608-73-17, C HgCl, is converted into hexachlorobenzene [118-74-17, C Clg, upon reaction with ferric chloride in chlorobenzene solution.
