Hexamethylenetetramine and cis-1,4-dichloro-2-butene (95%) were obtained from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc., and were not purified before use. 1,8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), chloroform, ethyl acetate, and hexane were distilled prior to use. 

Bell and Dunstan 123 subjected reactions ol hexamethylenetetramine with nitric acid, at various temperatures, to a detailed examination. Addition of water to nitrolysis solution obtained by the action of nitric acid (98%) on hex-amine at - 30°C yielded P.CX., that is 3,5-dinitro 3,5 diaza-l-azoniacycIo-hexane or 3,5-dinitro-3,5 diazapiperidinium nitrate (XIX) (Vol. Ill, p. 91, la). The nitrolysis mixture kept at O C for 2 hours yielded 83% UDX and traces of the linear compound derivative of tetra-azationanc (IX of p. 89, 91, Vol. 111). 

A solution of 100 mg 2,3,4-trimethoxyphenol (0.54 mmol) and 75.7 mg hexamethylenetetramine (0.54 mmol) in 0.5 mL trifluoroacetic acid was refluxed for4 h. After the reaction was quenched with the addition of ice, the resulting mixture was further stirred for 15 min and extracted with ether. The combined organic extracts were washed with saturated NaHC03 solution and brine, dried over anhydrous Na2S04, filtered, and then concentrated in vacuo. Hash chromatography (benzene/acetone, 10 1) of the residue gave 79.4 mg 2-hydroxyl-3,4,5-trimethoxy benzaldehyde as a powder, in a yield of 69%, m.p. 41-43°C (recrystallized from hexane).
