A second possible approach is to use a mixture of modifiers of very different activity. Initial control of molecular weight would be achieved this way mainly by the more active component, and later control of cross-linking by the less active. Experiments thus far are much less conclusive than those for incremental addition, but mixtures of Dixie and fert-hexadecyl mercaptan (active and relatively inactive, respectively) show that the general hypothesis is borne out. The mixed modifier procedure has the advantage that the whole charge is added initially.

Commercial-scale production of the high-molecular-weight tertiary mercaptans has yielded a number of products identified as tertiary dodecyl, tetradecyl, and hexadecyl mercaptans.
