Hexadecyl acetate

From the metasternal gland secretion of the locust tree borer Megacyllene robiniae Wheeler et al. [358] identified 2-( l,3-hexadienyl)-5-methyltetrahydro-furan 195 (no stereochemistry provided), hexadecyl acetate, octadecyl acetate, and 1-phenylethanol. 

The scent scales on the wings of a male lycaenid, Lycaeides argyroqnomon, secrete a mixture of n-nonanal, hexadecyl acetate, and a sesquiterpene alcohol, tentatively identified as torreyol (5-cadinol) (XXVIII) (113) the absolute configuration of the sesquiterpene has not been determined. These male-derived pheromones appear to play an important role in the courtship behavior of this species.

The chemistry and repellent efficacy of the anal exudate of the Cuban laurel thrips, Gynaikothrips ficorum, a gall-inhabiting species, have also been examined (9). Workers of Wasmannia auropunctata are rapidly repelled by an anal droplet from a thrips that is within a millimeter of the ants (9). Topical treatment of ants with anal exudate corresponding to 0.25 thrips equivalents resulted in 100% of the workers dragging themselves away from the scene of the encounter in much the same manner as occurs when these ants contact the thrips under field conditions. Both hexadecyl acetate and pentadecane caused dragging behavior after being applied to ant workers, which responded in a dose-dependent manner. Significantly, although hexadecyl acetate is more active than pentadecane, a combination of the two compounds is considerably more effective than the equivalent amounts of either of the two compounds alone. 

A third monoterpene, rose furan, has been identified as the major constituent produced by the thrips Arrhenothrips ramakrishnae (2 ). Rose furan is accompanied by perillene and in addition, hexadecyl acetate is quantitatively significant. Two aromatic compounds, phenol and phenylacetaldehyde, are minor concomitants in the anal exudate.
