Heterogeneity multiplicity

Murphy, D.L., Andrews, A.M., Wichems, C.H., Li, Q., Tohda, M., and Greenberg, B. (1998) Brain serotonin neurotransmission an overview and update with an emphasis on serotonin subsystem heterogeneity, multiple receptors, interactions with other neurotransmitter systems, and consequent implications for understanding the actions of serotonergic drugs. J Clin Psychiatry 59 5uppl 15 4-12. [Pg.32]

Skin is a heterogeneous, multiple-layer organ. In a typieal dermal absorption study, three biologieal levels are of main eoncem stratum comeum, epidermis, and whole skin (Sehaefer and Redelmeier, 1996). When the skin is exposed to a ehemieal mixture, the skin and the medium of the chemical mixture form an absorption system. For the three skin layers, three absorption systems could be generated for a given chemical mixture, which will provide abundant information on the three biological levels. [Pg.78]

Does multiple realizability really attack type-identity theory It seems obvious that many innocent properties are multiply realizable. For example, a specific mean kinetic energy of an entity can be realized by infinitely many spatial states of the entity s constituents (Kisfler 1999). This does not affect its being a basic kind. Thus, multiple realizability does not seem to threaten identity-theories per se. The trick is to introduce a distinction between heterogeneous multiple realization and homogeneous multiple realization. The former is bad for the identity-theorist,... [Pg.137]

VS eldon Springs Site, Missouri (WSOW) UMTRA (Title I) 0.6 Plume length value is very approximate. [U] well data is very heterogeneous. Multiple plumes observed. Very localized plume lengths with [U]>15 pCi/L ( 45 ppb) are only reported. [Pg.174]

The commonly accepted mechanism of heterogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation involves activation of both the hydrogen and the C—C multiple bond adsorbed on the metal surface. First one hydrogen atom is transferred to the least hindered position of the multiple bond to give a half-hydrogenated adsorbed species. This reaction is fully reversible and ac-... [Pg.101]

Composite materials have many distinctive characteristics reiative to isotropic materials that render application of linear elastic fracture mechanics difficult. The anisotropy and heterogeneity, both from the standpoint of the fibers versus the matrix, and from the standpoint of multiple laminae of different orientations, are the principal problems. The extension to homogeneous anisotropic materials should be straightfor-wrard because none of the basic principles used in fracture mechanics is then changed. Thus, the approximation of composite materials by homogeneous anisotropic materials is often made. Then, stress-intensity factors for anisotropic materials are calculated by use of complex variable mapping techniques. [Pg.343]

Under certain condition, however, reactions are still preferably conducted in solution. This is the case e.g., for heterogeneous reactions and for conversions, which deliver complex product mixtures. In the latter case, further conversion of this mixture on the solid support is not desirable. In these instances, the combination of solution chemistry with polymer-assisted conversions can be an advantageous solution. Polymer-assisted synthesis in solution employs the polymer matrix either as a scavenger or for polymeric reagents. In both cases the virtues of solution phase and solid supported chemistry are ideally combined allowing for the preparation of pure products by filtration of the reactive resin. If several reactive polymers are used sequentially, multi-step syntheses can be conducted in a polymer-supported manner in solution as well. As a further advantage, many reactive polymers can be recycled for multiple use. [Pg.382]

Among the theories of limited applicability, those of heterogeneous catalysis processes have been most developed (4, 5, 48). They are based on the assumption of many active sites with different activity, the distribution of which may be either random (23) or thermodynamic (27, 28, 48). Multiple adsorption (46, 47) and tunnel effects (4, 46) also are considered. It seems, however, that there is in principle no specific feature of isokinetic behavior in heterogeneous catalysis. It is true only that the phenomenon has been discovered in this category and that it can be followed easily because of large possible changes of temperature. [Pg.462]

Human interleukin 2, a 133-residue protein, has been separated into multiple molecular forms by selective immunoaffinity chromatography and chromatofocusing. Most of the heterogeneity has been attributed to variations in glycosylation of the threonine residue in position 3 of the polypep-... [Pg.64]
