It is eommon knowledge that the reaetion is a two-step proeess, whieh ineludes the addition of a nueleophile at an unsubstituted earbon of an arene or hetarene followed by the aromatization of the intermediate cr -adduet (94MT). Elimination of the hydride ion seems to be an improbable step eompared to the elimination of a nueleofuge X from sueh cr -adduets. Thus the aromatization of a (T -adduet is the key step for the whole reaetion, and it ean proeeed by several general paths, as shown in Seheme 1. 

Cyclazines may be considered as nitrogen-bridged annulenes rather than as hetarenes and, therefore, are only briefly mentioned in this volume. The chemistry of [3.3.3]cyclazines 1 and aza analogs, e. g. 3, is covered comprehensively in Houben-Weyl, Vol. E7b, p 205 IT. For another recent review, see ref 1. Subsequently, the chemistry of individual types of cyclazines has been reviewed, in particular 2.2.x]cyclazines,1 2 [2.2.2]cyclazines,3 [2.3.x]cyclazines4 and [2.2.3]-cyclazines.5 Moreover, the synthesis and the reactions of [2.2.3]cyclazines and the question of the effect of bcnzannulation have been addressed specifically.6... 

Nucleophilic substitutions of halogen by the addition-elimination pathway in electron-deficient six-membered hetarenes by sulfinate anions under formation of sulfones have been described earlier120. The corresponding electron-poor arenes behave similarly121 (equation 30). A special type of this reaction represents the inverse Smiles rearrangement in equation 31122.

Setzt man als Amidin-Komponente Amino-hetarene (z. B. 2-Amino-pyridine, 2- bzw. 4-Amino-pyrimidine) ein, so erhalt man Imidazole, bei denen liber die Positionen 1 und 2 des Imidazol-Rings ein heterocyclischer Ring anelliert ist96 98 ... 

Untersuchungen dcr UV-Spektren von Phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolen zeigen, daO das Hetaren nur als eine konjugierte Doppelbindungseinheit angesehen werden kann und nicht als ein aro-matisches (4n + 2)-Huckelsystem12,30. 3,5-Bis-[perfluor-alkyl]-l, 2,4-oxadiazole haben kein Absorptionsmaximum oberhalb von 220 nm9. 

Einen Spezialfall diirfte die photochemische Abspaltung der 4-standigen tert.-Butyl-Gruppe als Isobutan aus 4-tert.-Butyl-4,5-dihydro-l,2,4-oxadiazol zum Hetaren darstellen293, wie auch die Spaltung des kondensierten 4,5-Dihydro-l,2,4-oxadiazols I unter sauren Bedingungen326 ... 

Diese Eigenscbaft ist industriell von besonderem Interesse fur die Synthese von thcrmostabilen Polymeren. 2-Oxo-2,3-dihydro- und 2-Thiono-2,3-dihydro-l,3,4-oxadiazole sind nur formal als Hetarene aufzufassen, da sie nicht als tautomere 2-Hydroxy- bzw. 2-Mercapio-l, 3,4-oxa-diazole vorliegen. 

Diazoniono-hetarene (z. B. Diazoniono-pyrazole) kuppeln mit 2-Hydroxy-naphthalin zu interessanten Wirkstoffen, die cytostatische Eigenschaften besitzen z. B. ...
