Continuing to increase the amount of order, we leave true liquid crystal phases. The Sgc (crystal) phase is actually a three-dimensional crystal. Similarly, the Sj and Sq phases are crystalline versions of the Sj and Sp phases. Further phases (Se,Sh,Sk) are arrived at by including additional types of ordering such a herring bone packing and so on. [Pg.64]

Harata et al. [23] reported that the crystal structure of 2-0-[(S)-2-hydroxy-propyl]-y0-CD was solved by X-ray diffraction (Fig. 5). The molecules are arranged in a herring-bone fashion to form a cage-type packing structure. The hydroxypropyl group is inserted into the cavity of an adjacent molecule related by a two-fold screw axis. [Pg.6]

A 70-year-old woman with a history of diabetes melhtus and renal insufficiency rapidly developed a severe anemia (with a hemoglobin concentration of 3.5 mmol/1). She had been treated with recombinant erythropoietin (4000 lU/ week) for 6 months with an initial favorable response (hemoglobin concentration between 6.8 and 7.5 mmol/1) (82). Her bone marrow showed pure red cell aplasia with early termination of maturation. The dose of recombinant erythropoietin was increased to 8000 lU/week. She required 3 units of packed red cells per month. [Pg.1246]

The cage-type packing structure is frequently observed for relatively small guest molecules which can be enclosed in the host cavity. CyD molecules are arranged in a herring-bone fashion and both ends of the host cavity are closed by adjacent molecules to create an isolated "cage (Fig. 7.13A). The channel-type structure is... [Pg.163]

Fujishima et al. found that SAMs prepared of azobenzene-terminated long chain alkanethiols on gold surfaces show a herring-bone structure in which the long axes of the azobenzene moieties are parallel to each other and the short axes of neighbouring molecules are perpendicular to each other (Fig. 27) [183,184], In contrast, phenylazonaphthol alkanethiol mono-layers are densely packed as a J-aggregate and well oriented with a tilt angle of 28° [185]. [Pg.280]
