In 1967, Bengt Lindberg was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and was a member of the Nobel committee for chemistry between 1974 and 1987. He presented the prize winners of 1979 (Herbert Brown and Georg Wittig) and the prize winner of 1984 (Bruce Merrifield). He received a number of Swedish awards for his scientific contributions, including the Celsius medal (1985). He was awarded the Haworth Memorial Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry (1981) and was the first non-American to receive the Hudson Award from the American Chemical Society (1983). [Pg.26]

WITTIG, GEORGE (1897-1987). A University of Heidelberg professor who won the Nobel prize for chemistry in 1979 along with Herbert C. Brown of Purdue. Wittig s research showed that phosphorous ylids react with ketones and aldehydes to form alkenes. This reaction is used a great deal in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other complex organic substances. [Pg.1750]

Dr. Georg Wittig, University of Heidelberg, was awarded the 1979 Nobel Prize for chemistry for his work in organic synthesis. Dr. Herbert C. Brown of Purdue University also participated in the joint award, but for separate work in organic synthesis. [Pg.1750]
