January 28 Responding to the growing drug activity and violence in Miami, the Reagan administration creates a special interagency task force headed by future president George Herbert Walker Bush. 

President George Herbert Walker Bush appoints William Bennett to head the new Office of National Drug Control Policy. He becomes the first drug czar. A cultural conservative, Bennett will emphasize efforts to make drug abuse socially unacceptable.
