The organic acid salts, such as EDTA and heptonate, are included for water softening properties, and to assist in the removal of solid particles. Gluconate and heptonate, in particular, are effective in the highly alkaline solutions used for etching aluminium and prevent the precipitation of aluminium hydroxide scale and sludge. 

The trend in architectural applications has been towards more matt finishes, and the sodium hydroxide-based etchants used frequently contain additives such as sodium nitrate or nitrite or sodium fluoride. Chelating agents such as gluconates, heptonates or sorbitol are added to complex the aluminium produced, and other additives such as sulphides may be present in the etchant to complex zinc dissolved from the alloy, and allow it to be used continuously without dumping ...

In the form of sodium salts all are very soluble and have low freezing points, so that solidification in winter conditions is unlikely. Figure 1.8 shows the types and formulae of materials which have been reported to find application in the formulation of this type of water-reducing admixture. However, the only materials finding widescale application in formulations are the salts of gluconic and heptonic acids.

As discussed in Sect. 3.4, the synthon 20 was prepared from the dibromo-heptonolactone, which in turn was obtained from the cheap commercially available D-g(ycero-D-gM/o-heptono-l,4-lactone (Table 1). The other isomeric dibro-moheptonolactones shown in Table 1, which were prepared from the heptonates, obtained from chain extension of o-mannose and o-galactose, respectively, were also converted into unsaturated bromodeoxyheptonolactones. Finally, we obtained 2-0-acetyl-7-bromo-3,7-dideoxy-D-x7(o-hept-2-enono-l,4-lactone and the corresponding D-/yxo-isomer by the Kiliani extension of o-gulose. These substrates were all cyclized to cyclopentane lactones, stereoisomers of 65 [98].
