Heavy-Metal Fluoride Glass Corrosion

Corrosion layers formed on ZBLA glass (From D. G. Chen, Graduate Thesis, University of Florida, 1987, p. 101). (a) the two kinds of precipitates, (b) the bulk glass, transform layer, and precipitate layer. 

The first type is seen as needle-like crystals, and the second type is in spherical shape. The transform layer is amorphous. The bulk glass beneath the transform layer is unaffected.
