Heat source heating mantle

The submitters used an electric heating mantle as a source of heat. 

Try a hot plate, try a heating mantle (see Chapter 13, Sources of Heat ). But try to stay away from flames. Most of the fires I ve had to put out started when some bozo decided to heat some flammable sol-... 

A very nice source of heat, the heating mantle takes some special equipment and finesse. 

Clamp the flask (around the neck) a few inches up the ringstand (Fig. 68). We are using heating mantles and you ll need the room underneath to drop the mantle in case it gets too hot. That s why the flask is clamped at the neck. Yes. That s where the flask is ALWAYS clamped, no matter what heat source, so it doesn t fall when the mantle comes down. What holds the mantle Extension ring and clamp fastener. 

Further physico-chemical considerations which must never be forgotten are that, as implied above, heat must be steadily removed from the receiving vessel by some form of cooling and heat must be supplied to the source of the distillate. The heating rarely presents a problem, as water baths or hot air blowers are suitable for small vessels, say up to 0.5 1, and heating mantles or tapes for larger vessels. 

The mixture10 of diphosphorus tetraiodide and white phosphorus is introduced into flask A of the apparatus, which has been previously swept with carbon dioxide. This flask is constructed so as to fit a Glas Col spherical heating mantle which enables even heating. The connections between flask A and the condenser and between the condenser and flask B are wrapped in electrical heating tape which is connected to a variable source of power.

An electric heating mantle is a convenient heat source. 

The condenser is set for reflux, and the steam bath is replaced with a more potent source of heat (electric heating mantle, oil Imth, or direct flame). Concent rated hydrochloric acid is added... 

The reaction is performed in a dry nitrogen atmosphere, but no precautions need be taken during the purification steps. A 1-1., three-necked flask is equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a Glass Col heating mantle. One neck of the flask is fitted with a gas inlet tube which will protrude beneath the surface of the 300 ml. of solvent to be used and is attached to a source of carbon monoxide. It has been learned that a sample of methyl azodicarboxylate [Org. Synth., Coll. Vol. 11/1963, 411] violently decomposed during a distillation using an electrically heated mantle as a source of heat.
