Leads serve as the input—output interconnections between the component package and the mounting platform. Sometimes leads also aid in the dissipation of heat generated in the package. In the case of plastic packages, leads are formed from the leadframe, which also acts as a heat-dissipation path and a mechanical support for the die. [Pg.531]

A number of mechanisms have been proposed by which this common irradiated state is obtained. The most widely accepted is the thermal spike theory, which considers the heat generated in the wake of a fast particle passing through a soHd as being sufficient to cause severe stmctural disturbances which are then fro2en in by rapid cooling. Manufacture. Titanium chloride is manufactured by the chlorination of titanium compounds (1,134—138). The feedstocks usually used are mineral or synthetic mtile, beneficiated ilmenite, and leucoxenes. Because these are all oxygen-containing, it is necessary to add carbon as well as coke from either coal or fuel oil during chlorination to act as a reducing agent. The reaction is normally carried out as a continuous process in a fluid-bed reactor (139). The bed consists of a mixture of the feedstock and coke. Compressible fluid flow occurs between the two extremes of isothermal and adiabatic conditions. For adiabatic flow the temperature decreases (normally) for decreases in pressure, and the condition is represented by p V (k) = constant. Adiabatic flow is often assumed in short and well-insulated pipe, supporting the assumption that no heat is transferred to or from the pipe contents, except for the small heat generated by fricdon during flow. Isothermal pVa = constant temperature, and is the mechanism usually (not always) assumed for most process piping design.
