Head element

Unlike typical element groups the transition metal groups do not have head elements. [Pg.14]

From the tables it is clear that elements in Groups I-IV can display a valency equal to the group number. In Groups V-VII. however, a group valency equal to the group number (x) can be shown in the oxides and fluorides (except chlorine) but a lower valency (8 — x) is displayed in the hydrides. This lower valency (8 — x) is also found in compounds of the head elements of Groups V-VII. [Pg.20]

The properties of the head element of a main group in the periodic table resemble those of the second element in the next group. Discuss this diagonal relationship with particular reference to (a) lithium and magnesium, (b) beryllium and aluminium. [Pg.158]

All Group IV elements form both a monoxide, MO, and a dioxide, MO2. The stability of the monoxide increases with atomic weight of the Group IV elements from silicon to lead, and lead(II) oxide, PbO, is the most stable oxide of lead. The monoxide becomes more basic as the atomic mass of the Group IV elements increases, but no oxide in this Group is truly basic and even lead(II) oxide is amphoteric. Carbon monoxide has unusual properties and emphasises the different properties of the group head element and its compounds. [Pg.177]

Give brief experimental details to indicate how you could prepare in the laboratory a sample of either tin(IV) chloride or tin(IV) iodide. How far does the chemistry of the oxides and chlorides of carbon support the statement that the head element of a group in the Periodic Table is not typical of that group (JMB, A)... [Pg.204]

The head element nitrogen does not react. White phosphorus, however, reacts when warmed with a concentrated solution of a strong alkali to form phosphine, a reaction which can be regarded as a disproportionation reaction of phosphorus ... [Pg.212]

Ammonia is a colourless gas at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with a characteristic pungent smell. It is easily liquefied either by cooling (b.p. 240 K) or under a pressure of 8-9 atmospheres at ordinary temperature. Some of its physical and many of its chemical properties are best understood in terms of its structure. Like the other group head elements, nitrogen has no d orbitals available for bond formation and it is limited to a maximum of four single bonds. Ammonia has a basic tetrahedral arrangement with a lone pair occupying one position ... [Pg.216]

IA. IB as shown. The element at the top of each group was called the head element. Group VIII contained no head element, but was made up of a group of three elements of closely similar properties, called transitional triads . Many of these terms, for example group, period and head element, are still used, although in a slightly different way from that of Mendeleef. [Pg.3]

We study the dielectric and energy loss properties of diamond via first-principles calculation of the (0,0)-element ( head element) of the frequency and wave-vector-dependent dielectric matrix eg.g CQ, The calculation uses all-electron Kohn-Sham states in the integral of the irreducihle polarizahility in the random phase approximation. We approximate the head element of the inverse matrix hy the inverse of the calculated head element, and integrate over frequencies and momenta to obtain the electronic energy loss of protons at low velocities. Numerical evaluation for diamond targets predicts that the band gap causes a strong nonlinear reduction of the electronic stopping power at ion velocities below 0.2 a.u. [Pg.277]

But when Segre and his coworkers were preparing for irradiating a bismuth target with alpha particles the scientific community had known about the discovery of eka-cesium for more than a year. Transactions of the Paris Academy of Sciences published a paper headed Element 87 AcK formed from actinium and dated January 9, 1939. Its author was M. Perey, the assistant of the eminent radiochemist Debierne who had announced his discovery of actinium forty years earlier. [Pg.222]
