Readers tliat are not completely at ease with the contents of Chapters 19 and 20 will liave difficulty negotiating tliese case studies. Tliey are real-world examples drawn from literature accounts of potential or actual events. The metliods of quantitative analysis employed go beyond the level of elementary illustrative examples. 

Tlie following simplified example, constructed by Hendershot, will facilitate the transition to tlie case studies. Suppose that a risk assessment is being conducted at a chemical plant to detennine the consequences of two incidents (tlie initiating events of die event tree shown in Fig. 21.1.1) defined as 

an explosion resulting from detonation of an unstable chemical 

Incident I lias one possible outcome, an explosion, die consequences of which are assumed to be unaffected by weadier conditions. Incident II lias several possible outcomes whicli. for purposes of simplification, are reduced to 

vapor cloud explosion, caused by ignition of die gas released, centered at die release point, and unaffected by weather conditions
