Sectioning is accomplished using several types of manual and mechanical techniques. Hand held and home made forms of sectioning devices with razor blades are commonly found in any textile fiber laboratory. Stoves book on Fibre Microscopy [42] describes several of these methods, including a hand held metal plate, the Hardy microtome and other mechanical sectioning devices. Such instruments for cutting sections for optical microscopy were in use as early as the eighteenth century [43].
