Hardness functional

Fukui function represents, either the response of the chemical potential to variation in the external potential or the response of the density to changes in the number of electrons.6 The latter is important in charge transfer descriptions. Fukui function minimizes a hardness functional,17... [Pg.25]

By the way, the extreme value of the hardness functional is equal to the chemical hardness,17... [Pg.26]

Then energy and density come from the variational principle of the energy, while Fukui function and hardness are obtained from the minimization of the hardness functional. [Pg.26]

These workers defined a quantity, the hardness functional which had two properties of interest. For ground states, — became equal to the grand potential, E — N/j,. Also while not equal to the global hardness, rj, behaves like it with respect to small changes. Thus we have... [Pg.113]

This syndrome is often seen after hemodialysis and may last throughout the following day. It occurs mostly in elderly or debilitated patients who feel weak, washed out, and are hardly functional after dialysis. It has been suggested that the symptoms are caused by interleukin-1 released from activated monocytes (B22). More likely, however, the syndrome is related to water and electrolyte fluxes and the cardiovascular stress associated with hemodialysis. [Pg.97]

Thus far, one can see that the definitions of softness functions appear in a natural way when the difference between two Euler-Lagrange equations is considered. Loeal hardness [28] and global hardness [12, 28] will be discussed in the next section to complete the set of hardness functions. [Pg.30]

Worth noting that the ionization potential and the electronic affinity can be accordingly expressed in terms of orbital electronegativity and chemical hardness functions... [Pg.269]

The standard NF T 65-001 gives a classification for bitumen as a function of their hardness. This is measured using a needle penetrability test, which measures the penetration depth of a weighted needle into the bitumen. Five grades have been defined. [Pg.287]

An alternative to obtaining 0 directly involves defining some more convenient shape-dependent function, and an early but still very practical method is the following. We define a shape-dependent quantity as S = dsldg, as indicated in Fig. 11-16, de is the equatorial diameter and ds is the diameter measured at a distance de up from the bottom of the drop. The hard-to-measure size parameter h in Eq. 11-17 is combined with 0 by defining the quantity H = -0(defb). Thus... [Pg.27]

The statistical mechanical approach, density functional theory, allows description of the solid-liquid interface based on knowledge of the liquid properties [60, 61], This approach has been applied to the solid-liquid interface for hard spheres where experimental data on colloidal suspensions and theory [62] both indicate 0.6 this... [Pg.62]

The entropically driven disorder-order transition in hard-sphere fluids was originally discovered in computer simulations [58, 59]. The development of colloidal suspensions behaving as hard spheres (i.e., having negligible Hamaker constants, see Section VI-3) provided the means to experimentally verify the transition. Experimental data on the nucleation of hard-sphere colloidal crystals [60] allows one to extract the hard-sphere solid-liquid interfacial tension, 7 = 0.55 0.02k T/o, where a is the hard-sphere diameter [61]. This value agrees well with that found from density functional theory, 7 = 0.6 0.02k r/a 2 [21] (Section IX-2A). [Pg.337]

Statistical mechanical theory and computer simulations provide a link between the equation of state and the interatomic potential energy functions. A fluid-solid transition at high density has been inferred from computer simulations of hard spheres. A vapour-liquid phase transition also appears when an attractive component is present hr the interatomic potential (e.g. atoms interacting tlirough a Leimard-Jones potential) provided the temperature lies below T, the critical temperature for this transition. This is illustrated in figure A2.3.2 where the critical point is a point of inflexion of tire critical isothemr in the P - Vplane. [Pg.442]

Weak electrolytes in which dimerization (as opposed to ion pairing) is the result of chemical bonding between oppositely charged ions have been studied using a sticky electrolyte model (SEM). In this model, a delta fiinction interaction is introduced in the Mayer/-fiinction for the oppositely charged ions at a distance L = a, where a is the hard sphere diameter. The delta fiinction mimics bonding and tire Mayer /-function... [Pg.500]

The accuracy of the CSP approximation is, as test calculations for model. systems show, typically very similar to that of the TDSCF. The reason for this is that for atomic scale masses, the classical mean potentials are very similar to the quantum mechanical ones. CSP may deviate significantly from TDSCF in cases where, e.g., the dynamics is strongly influenced by classically forbidden regions of phase space. However, for simple tunneling cases it seems not hard to fix CSP, by running the classical trajectories slightly above the barrier. In any case, for typical systems the classical estimate for the mean potential functions works extremely well. [Pg.369]

With the current impressive CPU and main memory capacity of relatively inexpensive desktop PC s, non-direct SCF ab initio calculations involving 300-400 basis functions can be practical. However, to run these kinds of calculation, 20 GBytes of hard disk space might be needed. Such big disk space is unlikely to be available on desktop PCs. A direct SCF calculation can eliminate the need for large disk storage. [Pg.266]

Hexamethylolmelamine can further condense in the presence of an acid catalyst ether linkages can also form (see Urea Eormaldehyde ). A wide variety of resins can be obtained by careful selection of pH, reaction temperature, reactant ratio, amino monomer, and extent of condensation. Eiquid coating resins are prepared by reacting methanol or butanol with the initial methylolated products. These can be used to produce hard, solvent-resistant coatings by heating with a variety of hydroxy, carboxyl, and amide functional polymers to produce a cross-linked film. [Pg.1017]
