It has been seen that when the %H in a carbon film is increased, the hardness of the film initially increases at low %H concentration as the number of sp sites increase however, once a critical concentration is reached, the hardness starts to decrease or, at best, stays the same with increased film polymerization [8,30]. However, within the correct %H concentration range, the wear properties improve despite the hardness decreasing. In most cases, this is due to the effects of tribochemical wear improvement dominating over decreased hardness, at least until the film becomes very polymeric.
