The halogen-free plastic-derived oil obtained dnring the pilot plant studies was tested in diesel power generation engines in a 1 3 mixtnre with commercial fuel oils (kerosene) and the test was snccessfnl. 

In the early 1980s, when it appeared that hexane was in short supply, Johnson et al. described a 56-h pilot plant extrachon of cottonseed using an alternative solvent, methylene chloride (dichloromethane) (158). This solvent extracted the oil and signihcantly reduced levels of the antinutrients gossypol and aflatoxin. However, because of environmental concerns, the commercial use of halogenated hydrocarbons in solvent extraction has not occurred. 

The use of a microflow system is effective in solving this problem, and a pilot plant for the halogen-lithium exchange reaction of aryl bromides and heteroaryl bromides with butyllithium (Scheme 10.4) has already...

Impurities in the starting material stream can have positive effects (e.g., addition of halogen-containing compounds in silver-catalyzed ethylene oxide synthesis, but mostly their effects on catalyst performance are negative. In each case the catalyst must be tested with the original feed (e.g., from an integrated pilot plant).
