A key step in the reaction mechanism appears to be nucleophilic attack on the alkyl halide by the negatively charged copper atom but the details of the mechanism are not well understood Indeed there is probably more than one mechanism by which cuprates react with organic halogen compounds Vinyl halides and aryl halides are known to be very unreactive toward nucleophilic attack yet react with lithium dialkylcuprates... 

Fluorine forms very reactive halogen fluorides. Reaction of CI2 and F2 at elevated temperatures can produce GIF, CIF, or CIF 3 be obtained from the reaction of Br2 and F2. These halogen fluorides react with all nonmetals, except for the noble gases, N2, and O2 (5). Fluorine also forms a class of compounds known as hypofluorites, eg, CF OF (6). Fluorine peroxide [7783-44-0], O2F2, has also been reported (6). 

Reaction with Other Inorganic Halogen Compounds. Anhydrous HCl forms addition compounds at lower temperatures with halogen acids such as HBr and HI, and also with HCN. These compounds are stable at room temperature. 

It is possible to introduce sulfonic acid groups by alternative methods, but these ate Htde used in the dyes industry. However, one worth mentioning is sulfitation, because it provides an example of the introduction of a sulfonic acid group by nucleophilic substitution. The process involves treating an active halogen compound with sodium sulfite. This reaction is used in the purification of m-dinitrohen7ene. 

Carbon tetrachloride (as well as a number of other halogen compounds) greatly accelerates the reaction between magnesium and alcohol. If anhydrous alcohol is used the reaction will start in the course of some time without heating, whereas 99.5 per cent alcohol has to be heated nearly to the boiling point before the evolution of hydrogen becomes rapid.
