Haemolysis, prevention

The cytocompatibility of polyurethane nanocomposites is generally studied from red blood cell (RBC) haemolysis inhibition data obtained from the anti-hemolytic test described in Chapter 2. In most of the reported cases, vegetable oil-based polyurethane nanocomposites exhibit better haemolysis prevention against harmful free radicals than do their respective pristine polyurethanes. These observations indicate that the presence of nanomaterial in the nanocomposites plays a crucial role in RBC haemolysis prevention. [Pg.294]

Ofloxacin (t/ 4h) has modestly greater Grampositive activity, but less Gram-negative activity than ciprofloxacin. It is indicated for urinary and respiratory tract infections and gonorrhoea. Nalidixic acid (t5 6 h) is now used principally for the prevention of urinary tract infection. It may cause haemolysis in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficient subjects. [Pg.233]

Treatment of a person poisoned by ricin involves alimentary canal decontamination procedures so as to prevent absorption of the toxin. These include the use of syrup of ipecac to induce vomiting, activated charcoal to adsorb the toxin and cathartics to accelerate expulsion. Where a suspected poisoning has occurred but the patient remains asymptomatic, alimentary canal decontamination should still be undertaken and hospital observation for at least six hours after suspected poisoning should take place. The patient should be told to return immediately if symptoms begin. Where more severe poisoning has occurred treatment with intravenous fluids, monitoring for haemolysis and hypoglycaemia, supportive care and the possibility of hypovolaemia should be considered. [Pg.323]

Increases in plasma haemoglobin are seen when there is intra vascular haemolysis, e.g. haemolytic anaemias. Th haemoglobin can bind to haptoglobin to prevent its loss in th urine. If the binding capacity of the haptoglobin is exceeded however, haemoglobinuria results. [Pg.170]

Several tricyclic dyestuffs have been found to prevent the spontaneous haemolysis of pathologically fragile erythrocytes and to inhibit the haemolysis of... [Pg.165]
