A low energy intake in female runners, rowers or gymnasts in order to maintain a low body weight can lead to other disturbances in eating such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa. In section 3.2 the main principles of ID and 2D NMR experiments are brielly discussed and some typical examples are shown. It is not the aim of this book to give you an introduction into the mechanics of multiple pulse experiments or the gymnastics of spins in such experiments. If you are interested in the physics and the experimental aspects of the various NMR experiments you are referred to Data Acquisition (volume 2) of this series, where these topics are discussed in detail. 

There is a systematic way to handle this problem without algebraic gymnastics. 

Amber, or fossilized tree sap, is also made up of polymers. Pine trees contain a polymer called rosin. Violinists use rosin to make their bows slide more easily over the violins strings. Gymnasts also use rosin to improve their grips on uneven bars and other gymnastics equipment. Rosin is used in some kinds of soap, too.

The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) began as a group of representatives of the gymnastics associations of Belgium, France, and the Netherlands in 1881. so now includes countries from around the world. 

When turpentine has been distilled from plant resin, the remaining residue is rosin, which is used to increase surface friction. Rosin may also be derived directly from plants, if the natural resin is dehydrated. The common uses of rosin are in soldering flux, and as a surface treatment on stringed musical instruments. Athletes also use rosin to enhance the grip of hands and feet in many fields, from gymnastics to ballet. 

With an understanding of the response of the nuclear magnetization to an rf pulse, we can further manipulate the spin system by applying a sequence of pulses. The magnetization is rotated by the first pulse, allowed to precess for some period, and rotated further by subsequent pulses. Chapters 9 and 10 are devoted largely to the application of a variety of pulse sequences and the resultant spin gymnastics that the nuclear magnetizations experience. Here we consider only two simple pulse sequences to illustrate the versatility and to lay the foundation for later discussion. 

In previous chapters we have referred to sequences of pulses that can be used to make particular measurements, such as 7j and T2 (Section 2.9), and more complex sequences that narrow lines in solids (Section 7.8). In this chapter we explore the use of pulse sequences in more detail and investigate the behavior of magnetizations when subjected to arrays of pulses. We follow these spin gymnastics about as far as possible with the classical picture of magnetization vectors and set the stage for invoking the more powerful formalisms described in Chapter 11. 

A mind with muscles so flabby that it sickens under a little gymnastics, is one whose creations we can afford to lose. And the fact seems to be that analysis, if not indulged to excess, is an aid, not a hindrance, to appreciation.
