Guarded block

At the end of the sweeping out, the tap Ti is first closed, and then the taps T3, T4, Ts and Tj in this order. The tubes R and S are then detached from the beak of the combustion tube, the guard tube V is then detached from them and replaced on the combustion tube beak. The furnace and thermostatic mortar are then switched off and the combustion tube allowed to cool with the tap to the oxygen supply open. The bung J is removed, and the boat withdrawn by means of a piece of rigid copper wire with a small hook in the end that fits into the small hole in the lip at the back of the boat the bung is then replaced and the boat transferred to its block in the desiccator. [Pg.481]

A microparticulate hplc column is a very efficient filter, and if the mobile phase contains any particulate matter, or acquires it from the pump and/or the injection valve due to wear, it will collect at the top of the column. If this happens, the pressure drop across the column for a given flow will gradually increase, and the column may eventually become completely blocked. To prevent this happening, the mobile phase should always be filtered before use, preferably through a 0.5 p,m porosity filter, and guard and scavenger columns should be used as a matter of routine (see Section 5.3.2). [Pg.191]

In the center of the cell block, the guard halted. Under a dingy light, Ilgner faced the cell wall, scribbling. As the key scraped in the lock, he turned to tell the guard to go away. "Already too often I have been interrupted by this woman — and while I was writing in my own hand."... [Pg.60]

A small volume of the sample, typically <0.5 mL, is introduced into the injection system of an ion chromatograph. The sample is mixed with an eluent and pumped through a guard column, a separation column, a suppressor device, and a detector, normally a conductivity cell. The separation column is an ion exchange column that has the ability to separate the ions of interest. The separation column is often preceded by a shorter guard column containing the same substrate as the separation column in order to prevent the separation column from becoming overloaded and/or blocked by particles. Different types of separation columns, eluents, and suppression devices have to be used for anions and cations. Each ion is identified by its retention time within the separation column. [Pg.404]

When only potassium carbonate or organic solvents are used, the effects are less important. Potassium carbonate blocks the catalyst pores, and can be removed by washing with water to restore normal performance. Methanation catalysts can be protected from poisons by installing a guard bed of zinc oxide absorbent. This will remove traces of sulfur and droplets of liquid from the carbon dioxide removal system70. [Pg.158]

The combustion chamber was a round channel 9.53 mm in diameter and 0.864 m long. The first 0.623 m was confined by a high purity, aluminum oxide tube. The final 0.241 m consisted of the central hole of an aluminum oxide block formed from WulflE furnace elements. The tube was insulated with 6.4 mm of powdered alumina surrounded by a larger aluminum oxide tube which was in turn insulated with glass fibers. Propane-air flames in six equidistant surroimding channels acted as guard heaters in the block. The block was insulated with powdered alumina. [Pg.85]
