Growth stimulating action

Inositol was considered at one time as a potential precursor of ascorbic add. It does give rise to glucuronic acid (B43, C3) but not to detectable amounts of ascorbic add. Anderson et al. (A2) have now reported that myoinositol has no antiscorbutic or growth-stimulating action in the guinea pig. 

Even in the earher considerations of the relation between SH and growth, some attempt was made to narrow the formulation of the problem. The SH activation of proteolytic enzymes was recognized in the early 1930 s. The notion of the reversibility of proteolytic enzymes is one that has been current for a long time and is still not without its advocates. It is therefore not at all siuprising that various workers (5, 10) should have stressed the possibility that the growth-stimulating action of glutathione derived from the activation of intracellular proteases in their postulated synthetic role.

Chlorfenethol, prochlonol and dicofol are powerful acaricides, but they differ with respect to their spectrum of activity. Characteristic of chlorfenethol (2) is its strong ovicidal. action, while the effect of dicofol (4) is directed mainly to more developed stages. The most characteristic feature of prochlonol (3) is its rapid onset of action. Its activity against adults of Tetranychus urticae is about the same as that of dicofol (4) its residual ovicidal activity, however, proved to be markedly better. Prochlonol shows interesting plant growth stimulation, resulting in better performance of the leaves and bigger fruits (Busschots, 1967). 

Several compounds with growth-regulating action are known among the cyclic N-phenylimides. These are used for the stimulation of pollenation, and in the growing of partenocarpic fruits, such as tomatoes.
