Growth rate of cracks

The experimentally established growth rate of cracks (determined through activity increase when corroding) makes up 6-7.5 lO " cm/h at 100°C and diminishes with temperature decrease. The above said allow concluding that protracted many-year storage could cause considerable degradation of unsealed fuel elements. 

Figure 8.42 shows one outcome of such studies. The addition of surface treated glass beads requires substantially higher stress to support the same growth rate of cracks compared with neat epoxy. Good adhesion and stress distribution are responsible for improvement.

The /V-alkyl-/V-aryl- -PDAs (where the aryl is phenyl and the alkyl may be cyclohexyl, 1,3-dimethylbutyl or 1-methylethyl) ate the most widely used /)-PDAs. These derivatives reduce the rate of crack growth and also the number of cracks. The alkyl-aryl- -PDAs are in general excellent antiozonants, particularly in dynamic environments. These derivatives are destroyed only slowly by oxygen and increase the scorchiness of the stock only slightly. These are intermediate in staining among the three classes of -PDAs. 

In general, as the corrosiveness of the environment increases, the rate of crack growth also increases. Environmental factors constituting corrosiveness vary with the metal under consideration. 

To be effective, the antiozonants should have two important functions decrease the rate of crack growth in the rubber, and increase the critical stress value (i.e. the stress at which crack growth occurs). Therefore, the following properties of an antiozonant are desirable.

An empirical relationship between the rate of crack growth and the stress range has been formulated (Paris - Erdogan Law) ... 

Rock-crystal occurring in vein-type ore deposits grows in ascending hydrothermal solution through cracks in the strata. The flow of solution causes the solute component to be supplied to crystals growing inclined to or perpendicular to the wall of the crack. In laminar flow, the growth rate of the side facing the flow increases compared with the opposite side. In turbulent flow, the situation will be reversed. 

Autoffettage is a useful measure for statically as well as dynamically pressurized vessels (see section 4.1.5.1). There is also a benifitial impact on the decrease of the rate of crack growth and the increase of the critical crack depth. 

In this fracture mechanics approach, the rate of crack growth is a function of the maximum value of tearing energy attained during the fatigue cycle. For a strip with an edge or central cut cycled in tension, a relation between cycles to failure and the initial cut size for the case where that cut is relatively very small can be derived8,9 ...
