Herbicide growth inhibition, induced

Determining Causes and Categorizing Types of Growth Inhibition Induced by Herbicides... [Pg.207]

A number of studies have demonstrated that the phytotoxic action of trifluralin and of other dinitroaniline herbicides can be antidoted with the use of compensation-type antagonists (for a review, see Ref. 121). Ascorbic acid, cysteine, 2,3-d-mercaptoethanol, and D-a-tocopherol acetate have all been reported to reduce growth inhibitions induced by trifluralin or other dinitroaniline herbicides. It is evident, however, that the antagonism of dinitroaniline herbicidal activity by these compounds does not seem to be related to the primary mechanism of action of these herbicides. As mentioned in Section 6.3.2, dinitroaniline herbicides act by interfering with the function and polymerization of plant microtubules. ... [Pg.183]

In this context, we recently discovered close correlations between auxin-induced ethylene synthesis, massive accumulations of ABA in root md even more in shoot tissue and inhibition of their growth. This phenomenon, which has been reported for the first time, was demonstrated for auxin herbicides from different chemical classes (Figure 1), such as quinmerac, quinclorac, MCPA, naphthalene acetic acid, dicamba and picloram, and lAA at high concentration, in a variety of dicot species, including members of the Sola-naceae, Umbelliferae, Fabaceae, Scrophulariaceae and Brassicaceae [35, 39, 40]. ABA accumulation and concomitant epinastic effects and reduced shoot growth were also... [Pg.136]

The modes of action of this group are not similar. Dichlobenil is apphed to the soil as granules and prevents the germination of annual weeds and shoot growth in perennials. Bromoxynil and ioxynil induce foliar chlorosis and necrosis. The degradation products of these herbicides also inhibit other complex cellular processes, and their precise modes of action are unknown. [Pg.171]
