Group 14 elements silicon hydrides

Lewis acids based on boronic acid derivatives or main group elements such as mercury, tin and silicon form strong bonds to anions with considerable covalency, exemplified by hydride sponge and the anticrowns.

The hydrides of B and Si are volatile and flammable compounds. The boranes, as the boron hydrides are termed, form many interesting hydrogen-bridged structures that are seldom observed with other main group elements. Both boron and silicon form numerous and complex oxygen-containing structures knovm as the borates... 

Group 14 hydrides, in particular, silicon hydrides are of practical interest due to their widespread use in synthetic chemistry and their employment as precursors for high purity elements as well as alloys for electronic devices (1). However, the corresponding stable silicon compound of oxidation state +2 is not well known. Here we describe the syntheses of a donor—acceptor stabilized silicon(II)-monohydride starting from stabilized chloro silylene, [PhC(NfBu)2]SiCl (1) (2). Subsequently, Rivard et al. reported the synthesis of donor—acceptor stabilized silicon(II)-dihydride using N-heterocyclic carbene as a donor and BH3 as an acceptor (3). 

Hydrides are an important group of precursors that are used to deposit single elements such as boron or silicon. As described in Ch. 4, they are also used in conjunction with metallo-organics to form III-V and II-VI semiconductor compounds as shown in the following examples ]...
