Grinding material

Since its grinding volume is some 30-40 times smaller than that of a ball mill for the same task, the Szego mill is compact for its capacity. It is characterised by relatively low specific energy consumption, typically 20-30 per cent lower than in a ball mill, and flexibility of operation. It can give a large reduction ratio, typically 10-20, and grinds material down to a 15-45 xm size range. 

Wilson and McGregor [2S] concluded that it is appropriate to use robotics for grinding materials for geological samples. Studies deahng with cross contamination revealed that even samples containing levels of Ph, Zn or Cr above 1% did not pose a problem, provided that 2S g of sand is used to clean the system prior to the next sample analysis. 

In case of unknown physical properties, Oz and jS, Equation (72) is reduced to J50 = /(E/p V), which is then used for the scale-up of a given type of mill and grinding material. 

Grind material to 30 mesh with a laboratory mill. 

Prepare plant extract. Grind material (acorn parts, bud scales, bark, or leaves) into fine powder. Extract 100 mg material (ground acorn tips or bases, or powdered bud scales) in 0.5-ml MeOH/HjO (50 50) [or a 70% acetone-MeOH mixture] for 1-3 h at room temperature. Pipette off supernatant. 

Inereasing the volume of the grinding material increases the power requirement and generates more heat deereasing the volume of grinding material decreases the quality of dispersion...
