Grignard compounds organomagnesium halides

Grignard reagents Organomagnesium halides RMgX having a C-Mg bond, halohydrins Halo alcohols. For example, ethylene bromohydrin is BrCH2CH20H. helicenes Ortho-fused polycyclic aromatic compounds that have a helical structure. 

In 1848, Edward Frankland attempted to prepare free ethyl radicals by the reaction of EtI with metallic zinc. Instead, he became the founder of organometallic chemistry by showing that the colorless liquid formed was diethylzinc, the first compound known to contain a metal-carbon bond. Victor Grignard s organomagnesium halides of 1900 made organometallic compounds indispensable in organic chemistry. Pope and Peachey s MesPtI (1909) was an early but isolated example of a d-block metal alkyl. 

The reduction of carbonyl compounds by reaction with hydride reagents (H -) and the Grignard addition by reaction with organomagnesium halides (R - +MgBr) are examples of nucleophilic carbonyl addition reactions. The term Grignard reaction refers to both the preparation of a class of organomagnesium halide compounds and their subsequent reaction with a wide variety of organic and inorganic substrates. As such it has had a wide and profound influence on synthetic chemistry since its first elucidation by Victor Grignard at the beginning of the twentieth century. 

Organomagnesium halides (the Grignard reagents) are still the organometallic compounds most widely used in preparative organic chemistry, owing this to the relative ease of their preparation and handling.
