Even more widely used are a variety of roller-coating techniques. In forward roller coating a controlled amount of paint is metered onto the surface of a rubber or gelatine roller rotating such that, at its point of contact with the sheet or web, roller and sheet are moving in the same (forward) direction. Even finer control of thin coatings is obtained if the paint is transferred from gravure cells onto the application roller. 

The film is continuously coated from the front or backside by rolls or knife coating. For small-volume items frequently gravure or a roller coater is used. All these applications result in an even orientation of the metallic flakes parallel to surface. The frequently used spraying technique has a disadvantage in this case because, due to its high viscosity, the metal pigment shows only little orientation. 

This paper gives an outline of one of the most successful applications of electrostatic techniques in an existing production process, namely, the electrostatic assist process for ink transfer in gravure printing.
