Granular materials bulk densities

Porosity and Density There are three important densities of granular or agglomeratecf materials bulk density pt (related to the volume occupied by the bulk solid), the apparent or agglomerate density pg (related to the volume occupied by the a lomerate including internal porosity), and the true or skeletal soli% density pj. These densities are related to one another and the interagglomerate voidage ej, and the intraagglomerate porosity Eg [Eq. (21-96)].

Classification of size enlargement methods reveals two distinct categories (8,39). The first is forming-type processes in which the shape, dimensions, composition, and density of the individual larger pieces formed from finely divided materials are of importance. The second is those processes in which creation of a coarse granular material from fines is the objective, and the characteristics of the individual agglomerates are important only in their effect on the properties of the bulk granular product. 

From isotherm measurements, usually earried out on small quantities of adsorbent, the methane uptake per unit mass of adsorbent is obtained. Sinee storage in a fixed volnme is dependent on the uptake per unit volume of adsorbent and not on the uptake per unit mass of adsorbent, it is neeessary to eonvert the mass uptake to a volume uptake. In this way an estimate of the possible storage capacity of an adsorbent can be made. To do this, the mass uptake has to be multiplied by the density of the adsorbent. Ihis density, for a powdered or granular material, should be the packing (bulk) density of the adsorbent, or the piece density if the adsorbent is in the form of a monolith. Thus a carbon adsorbent which adsorbs 150 mg methane per gram at 3.5 MPa and has a packed density of 0.50 g/ml, would store 75 g methane per liter plus any methane which is in the gas phase in the void or macropore volume. This can be multiplied by 1.5 to convert to the more popular unit, V/V. 

All commercial carbons have been made for uses other than natural gas storage. They are for the most part granular materials and pack into vessels with a substantial inter-particle void volume which results in low bulk densities. Some...

Most solid high expls are manufd by processes that yidd granular material. Their bulk densities are generally somewhat less than 1 g/cu cm. They are used in military applications as solids of well defined configurations, usually at densities between 1.5 and 1.7g/cu cm... 

The physical properties of granular materials that bear particularly on their conveying characteristics include size distribution, true and bulk densities, and angle of repose or coefficient of sliding friction, but other less precisely measured or described properties are also of concern. A list of pertinent properties appears in Table 5.2.
