Veratramine, C27H3g02N, occurs naturally in V. viride and V. grandi-florum and is also formed by the hydrolysis of veratrosine. It has m.p. 209-210-5°, fa] — 68° (MeOH), and yields a dihydro-derivative, m.p. 198-200°, and a triacetyl-derivative, m.p. 204-6°, which on controlled hydrolysis leaves a. V-acetyl derivative, m.p. 177-180°. Aceording to Saito, veratramine on treatment with methyl iodide in methyl alcohol in presence of sodium carbonate, yields A-methylveratramine methiodide, m.p. 268° (dec.), from whieh the methoehloride, m.p. 277°, ean be prepared.

The comparatively low level of interpopulational variation in the monoterpenes of A. grandis resembles that for A. amabilis commented upon above. As noted by Zavarin etal. (1977), it is likely that A. occupied much the same areas during...

Scheme 54 summarizes Font s synthesis of (+)-grandisol (36), the male pheromone of the cotton boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) [80]. The key-step is the double [2+2] photocycloaddition of ethylene to bis(a,(3-butenohde) A to give B, which yielded C after glycol cleavage. The recently identified pheromone of the oleander scale (Aspidiotus nerii) possesses a structure similar to that of grandisol (Scheme 54), and its synthesis was reported by Ducrot [81 ] and also by Guerrero [82,83].
