The GAGs are synthesized by the sequential actions of a battery of specific enzymes (glycosyltransferases, epimerases, suhotransferases, etc) and are degraded by the sequential action of lysosomal hydrolases. Genetic deficiencies of the latter result in mucopolysaccharidoses (eg, Hurler syndrome).
