Glycosides enzymic synthesis

The scope of the present review will be limited to the enzyme and protein characteristics of galactosidases, and their occurrence, isolation, characterization, and properties as catalytic agents. The topic of induced enzyme-synthesis will only be touched on, and reference will be made to original and review articles on the subject. The biological role played by these enzymes will not be discussed. Throughout the article, all glycosides discussed will be understood to be pyranoid, unless otherwise noted.

In carrying out the hydrolysis in alcoholic solution it was observed that the hydrolysis was incomplete, and this led to the discovery of the synthesizing action of enzymes mentioned above. The enzymic synthesis then was utilized in methods for the biochemical determination of glucose and galactose by converting them to the corresponding glycosides. 

Routes have been developed for the synthesis of the 9-0-, 4-0-, 7-0-, and 7,8-di-O-acetylated derivatives of the 4-methylumbelllferyl-a-glycoside of KDN.46 The S)Tithesis of the a-glycoslde itself is mentioned in Chapter 3, and an enzymic synthesis of 9-O-acetyl-NeuNAc is discussed in Chapter 7.
