Glycols foodstuffs

Propylene glycol is widely used as a solvent in topical glucocorticoids, other medicines (including diazepam, etomidate, and lorazepam), foodstuffs, cosmetics, household detergents, paints, and brake fluids. 

Propylene oxide is widely used in the chemical industry as an intermediate in the production of a broad spectrum of materials, such as polyether polyols, propylene glycol, and propylene glycol ethers. These products are further used in the manufacture of polyurethane, lubricants, and detergents. Propylene oxide is used for the fumigation of dried fruit and various other foodstuffs. Propylene oxide is also used for embedding tissues for electron microscopy. 

OTHER COMMENTS used as the starting material for the manufacture of acrylonitrile and nonionic surfactants used in the production of ethylene glycol used as a fumigant for foodstuffs and textiles used in the sterilization of surgical instruments. 

In Food Products. Algin has been eaten for hundreds of years as a constituent of kelp in specialty foods (37, 269) while algin itself has been used in various foodstuffs for a quarter of a century. Extensive animal feeding tests on sodium alginate and propylene glycol alginate have shown that they are nontoxic and not allergens (172,173,180). 

Sodium benzoate, which is obtained by the neutralizing of benzoic acid with NaOH, is used as a preservative in foodstuffs such as sauces, syrups and fruit juices. It also acts as a corrosion inhibitor in glycol-based anti-freeze, for which some 3,5001 were consumed in Western Europe in 1985.
