Glycogen breakdown during exercise

Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) are the essential amino acids, leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAAs are considered to be among the most beneficial and effective supplanents in any sports nutrition program. They are needed for the maintenance of muscle tissue aud appear to preserve muscle glycogen stores, and help prevent muscle protein breakdown during exercise. BCAA supplanents may be used to prevent muscle loss at high altitudes, prolong endurance performance, and to provide the needed amino acids not provided by a vegetarian diet. [Pg.270]

Epinephrine and norepinephrine, hormones called catecholamines, are released from the adrenal medulla during exercise. Epinephrine and, to a lesser extent, norepinephrine stimulate effects in muscles and the liver similar to those produced by glucagon. Epinephrine activates adenylate cyclase, resulting in such events as the breakdown of glycogen and fatty acids. [Pg.185]

Liver glycogen is used to maintain blood glucose during fasting or exercise. -Its breakdown is stimulated by glucagon and by epinephrine via a... [Pg.142]
