The simple alcohols whose trityl ethers have been prepared by treatment with trityl chloride and pyridine include, in addition to primary alcohols, 2-propanol, cyclohexanol, Z-menthol, d-borneol, and cholesterol. Trityl ethers involving the secondary hydroxyl group in glycerol are also known. - There can be no doubt, therefore, that secondary as well as primary hydroxyl groups react with trityl chloride in pyridine. 

An elegant method has been developed by Fischer and Baer for the transformation of d derivatives of glycerol into l derivatives with the aid of trityl ethers. 

Trityl ethers are also important for the synthesis of mixed glycerides. Glycerol can be made to react with either one or two molecules of triphenylmethyl chloride. 

Glycerol 1-trityl ether 787 Glycerol (8 g) and triphenylmethyl chloride (12 g) are dissolved in pyridine (30 ml), then set aside for 16 h at room temperature and next poured into water without regard to the pyridine hydrochloride that has crystallized. An oil separates and it... 

Ag-perchlorate dissolved in gently warmed nitromethane, Ga-sulfate as drying agent added, shaken and allowed to stand for a short time, glycerol 1-trityl ether 2,3-bis-(4-nitrobenzoate) added, allowed to stand briefly, myristoyl chloride added, after a few min. dry pyridine added drop wise until the color disappears glycerol 1-myristate 2,3-bis-(4-nitrobenzoate).
