With crystalline beef liver glutamic dehydrogenase the specific activity was 90 for glutamate oxidation and 950 for utamate formation 89). The reported specific activities of the chicken liver enzyme were 183 and 1350, respectively 91). 

L-Glutamic acid dehydrogenase was discovered independently by von Euler et al. (4) and Dewan (5). Crystallization of this enzyme was achieved by Olson and Anfinsen (d) from beef liver and by Snoke (7) from chicken liver.
