Glucuronic acid salts

Glycoproteins or mucoproieins. Compounds of proteins with carbohydrates. All glycoproteins contain a hexosamine and usually sulphate, ethanoate and glucuronic acid. The carbohydrate-protein linkages are, in some cases covalent and in others of the salt type. Aqueous solutions of glycoproteins are extremely viscous.

Gum ghatti is the calcium and magnesium salt of a complex polysaccharide which contains L-arabinose, D-galactose, D-mannose, and D-xylose and D-glucuronic acid (48) and has a molecular weight of approximately 12,000. On dispersion in water, gum ghatti forms viscous solutions of viscosity intermediate between those of gum arabic and gum karaya. These dispersions have emulsification and adhesive properties equivalent to or superior to those described for gum arabic.

The crude gum tragacanth is a mixture of the salt of a complex acid polysaccharide and a neutral polysaccharide composed principally of L-arabinose residues. Starch is also present in the gum. The acid character of this gum is due to units of D-galacturonic acid and not D-glucuronic acid and it is of interest to note that in its ability to form gels it resembles pectin and the plant mucilages, which also contain D-galacturonic acid. 

Vanilloylglycine, feruloylglycine and /w-coumaric acid glucuronide are identified after oral administration of caffeic acid to humans [15], Intraperitoneal injection of the sodium salt of caffeic acid to rats also produces these conjugates. Thus, conjugation with glycine or glucuronic acid in body tissues is demonstrated. 

Calcium, barium and sodium 1,2-isopropylidene-D-glucuronates were prepared from authentic 1,2-isopropylidene-D-glucuronic acid. The crystalline calcium salt contained 5.5 molecules of water and had [a]n25 —1.54° (c, 1.97, water), while the barium salt was a monohydrate insoluble in water.
