Glucose glycogen synthesis

The insulin receptor is a transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase located in the plasma membrane of insulin-sensitive cells (e.g., adipocytes, myocytes, hepatocytes). It mediates the effect of insulin on specific cellular responses (e.g., glucose transport, glycogen synthesis, lipid synthesis, protein synthesis). [Pg.632]

Figure 13-13. The glycogen molecule. A General structure. B Enlargement of structure at a branch point. The molecule is a sphere approximately 21 nm in diameter that can be visualized in electron micrographs. It has a molecular mass of 10 Da and consists of polysaccharide chains each containing about 13 glucose residues. The chains are either branched or unbranched and are arranged in 12 concentric layers (only four are shown in the figure). The branched chains (each has two branches) are found in the inner layers and the unbranched chains in the outer layer. (G, glycogenin, the primer molecule for glycogen synthesis.)... Figure 13-13. The breakdown of glycogen to glucose 1-phosphate is catalyzed by phosphorylase. Glycogen synthesis involves a different pathway via uridine diphosphate glucose and glycogen synthase (Figure 18-1). [Pg.155]

ATPs are required to store each glucose as glycogen. Synthesis 1... [Pg.163]

It was discovered nearly 20 years ago that V(V) as vanadate and V(IV) as vanadyl can mimic some of the effects of insulin (stimulate glucose uptake and oxidation and glycogen synthesis) (512, 513). Vanadate is an effective insulin mimetic in the diabetic rat (514), but has proved to be too toxic for human use. Vanadyl, as VOS04, is also unsuitable because high doses are needed on account of its poor oral absorption. Vanadium complexes with organic ligands have proved to be less toxic and can have improved aqueous solubility and lipophil-icity. [Pg.267]

Glycogenolysis and glycogen synthesis P-oxidation of fatty acids transamination and deamination of amino acids Cori cycle and glucose-alanine cycle, which recycles substrates between muscle and liver. [Pg.229]
