Fasting glucagon

Fasting Retrieve glucose and fat Low insulin, high glucagon... [Pg.207]

The regulation of fat metabolism is relatively simple. During fasting, the rising glucagon levels inactivate fatty acid synthesis at the level of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and induce the lipolysis of triglycerides in the adipose tissue by stimulation of a hormone-sensitive lipase. This hormone-sensitive lipase is activated by glucagon and epinephrine (via a cAMP mechanism). This releases fatty acids into the blood. These are transported to the various tissues, where they are used. [Pg.222]

In the GI tract, different hydrodynamic conditions are present, depending on the fasted or the fed state. Contraction patterns are controlled in terms of electromechanical impulses (myoelectric activity) as well as by various hormones (cholecystokinin, secretin, glucagon, motilin, and insulin, for example). In the fasted state, the motility pattern is regulated by the (interdigestive) migrating myoelectric complex [(I)... [Pg.162]

The first phosphatase step is very important FBPase converts fructose,1-6-bisphos-phate into fructose-6-phosphate under allosteric control of several factors but during fasting, glucagon-induced regulation is crucial. One effect of glucagon stimulation of liver cells is to reduce the concentration of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, an isomer that activates PFK-1 and is itself synthesized by PFK-2 when fructose-6-phosphate concentration rises... [Pg.222]

E. Therapeutic response Glucagon (rDNA origin) is usually administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously. After injection, patients in hypoglycemia usually recover within 15 minutes. In a study of fasting healthy human subjects, a subcutaneous dose of Glucagon (Eli Lilly) 1 mg resulted in a mean peak glucose concentration of 136mg/dl 30 minutes after injection. Simi-... [Pg.224]
