The global expansion of industrial and consumer-oriented societies is linked to large-scale industrial production and consumerism that utilize a vast array of numerous chemical compounds. The listings of such chemicals are too vast to present in this paper but some examples will be discussed here. Environmental contaminants in nature typically involve complex mixtures, partitioning factors, chemical transformations, and abiotic and biotic interactions. The biological and environmental effects are complex and may be additive, synergistic and even antagonistic in nature. 

For many in the chemical industry these claims may sound hollow. Everyone knows that global expansion of the chemical industry, even with good faith efforts to comply with safety and pollution requirements, is assumed to carry with it adverse and unintended effects from chemical production and use. Such is the price of economic growth - correct Wrong. In fact, our passive acceptance of this paradigmatic view of the chemical industry may pose the most formidable obstacle to change. If so, the challenge may be more in our minds than our capabilities.

Supply chain globalization happened in multiple phases. The first stage was from 1999 to 2003. In this phase, companies opened regional offices, formulated channel strategies, and initiated work to open new channels. For some companies, global expansion was a drive to lower costs through the use of cheaper sources of labor but for supply chain leaders, it was a quest for value.

Evidently, this model entails simplifications. First, we only compute the properties of a 2D object. We study hemicylinders rather than hemispheres. A second somewhat subtle difference between the model and a real liquid surface has to do with local or global expansion and contraction. If an elastic membrane if forced to contract at some spot and to expand by the same amount somewhere else, the membrane responds with a restoring force. A liquid surface would not do this. Liquid surfaces only respond to a change in total area. This is a caveat to be kept in mind.
